PwC index: last week's closing price of the index

PwC index stands for previous week close, index: the closing price of the official index itself — for example the S&P 500 or the DAX — on the last trading day of last week. It is the price every weekly chart closes on and the number in every "the market ended the week …" report, so the new week is measured against it. On a futures chart you can't simply draw it: futures such as ES or FDAX trade tens to hundreds of points away from their index (the cash-future difference). Basics converts the index's closing price to the prices of the chart you are looking at. The line is switched off by default; this page explains what it shows and how to switch it on.

What last week's closing price is

An index has one official closing price per trading day, set when its stock market closes. The closing price of the last trading day of the week — usually Friday — is the weekly closing price:

Nasdaq-100, S&P 500, Dow, Russell 200016:00 New York time
DAXThe Xetra closing price, set in the closing auction after 17:30 Berlin time
FTSE 10016:30 London time
AEX17:30 Amsterdam time

When a new week starts, traders measure the market against it: above last week's closing price the market has gained since then, below it, it has lost. A move back to it is a natural place for price to stall or turn.

Index close or the future's last price?

An index future keeps trading after the stock market has closed: ES and YM until 17:00 New York time, FDAX until 22:00 Berlin time. Its last price of the week is a different number, drawn as its own line: PwC future. Anything that moves the market after the stock market has closed on Friday is only in the future's last price.

How Basics shows it

PwC index is drawn on every supported chart — futures (main, mini, micro, nano), CFDs and the index itself — each time at the right price for that chart. On a futures chart, for example ES or MYM, the index's closing price is converted with the current cash-future difference; on a CFD or index chart it is the closing price itself.

Same price as yesterday's closing price? On the first trading day of a week, yesterday is last Friday — so last week's closing price is also the previous session's. Then the label reads PsC/PwC index: one line with both names. At the start of a month it can read PwC/PmC index.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weekly closing price of an index?

The official closing price of the index on the last trading day of the week, usually Friday: 16:00 New York time for the US indices, the Xetra closing price for the DAX. If Friday is a holiday, it is the closing price of the last day that traded.

Why is PwC index on my ES chart not the S&P 500's closing price?

ES trades at a different price than the S&P 500. Basics converts the index's closing price with the current cash-future difference, so the line sits where that level lies on ES.

Why don't I see PwC index?

It is switched off by default. Switch it on under Index levels in the indicator settings.

Does it work on a US500 or GER40 CFD?

Yes. A CFD follows the index, so there the line is the index's closing price itself.

What is the difference with PwC future?

PwC index is the official closing price of the index. PwC future is the main future's last price of the week, which includes the trading after the stock market has closed.
